Diethyl 1-benzylazetidine-3,3-dicarboxylate is a nucleoside phosphorylase inhibitor that is synthesised from the nucleophile methylthioadenosine. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of enzyme phosphorylases, which are enzymes that hydrolyze phosphate esters in order to release energy and phosphate groups. This drug has been shown to have promising results in Alzheimer's disease models, as well as being able to cause lysis of cancer cells. Diethyl 1-benzylazetidine-3,3-dicarboxylate may also be an active analogue of piperidine, which is a potent anti-inflammatory agent.
