Lacmoid is a basic dye that is used to stain spermatozoa, cell nuclei, and other cells. It can be used as an indicator of low-energy radiation exposure, such as X-rays or gamma rays. Lacmoid stains are also used in the detection of antimicrobial peptides. Lacmoid reacts with hydrogen bonds in the peptide and forms a yellow complex with the dye, which can then be detected by spectrophotometry. This reaction is specific for wild-type strains of bacteria and does not occur with mutant strains or other organisms.
