2-Oxopyrrolidin-3-yl acetate is an antibiotic that has a broad spectrum of activity against gram-negative organisms. It is a lipase inhibitor and binds to the active site of the enzyme, inhibiting the hydrolysis of ester bonds. The surfactant properties of 2-oxopyrrolidin-3-yl acetate make it useful in cleaning applications. This antibiotic also exhibits antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacteria and can be immobilized on an inert carrier to provide sustained release. 2-Oxopyrrolidin-3-yl acetate is bacteriostatic for some organisms and bactericidal for others, depending on the concentration used. The organism most susceptible to this antibiotic is Staphylococcus aureus, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.06 μg/mL.
