3-Hydroxyflunitrazepam is a benzodiazepine that has been used in the past as an anesthetic agent. It is metabolized to 3-hydroxymethyl-4-phenylpyridine, which is excreted in urine. The main metabolites of 3-hydroxyflunitrazepam are 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroxyphenylacetic acid and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroxyphenol. This drug can be detected in urine samples by gas chromatography with chemical ionization detection (GC/CI). The GC/CI technique is a sensitive analytical method for the determination of drugs in human serum and urine samples by measuring their retention time relative to caffeine. The sample preparation procedure involves extraction of drug metabolites from human liver tissue or human serum using liquid-liquid extraction and filtration.
