1-Ethyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium chloride (EDIMIC) is a thermal expansion agent that is used to increase the viscosity of oils in order to control flow. EDIMIC is often used for treatments involving heat transfer, such as oil cooling. The theory behind this treatment is that EDIMIC will increase the viscosity of the oil and thus be able to absorb more heat before it reaches its boiling point. This can lead to a decrease in thermal expansion and a corresponding decrease in the rate of oil degradation. EDIMIC has been shown to have lower dielectric constant than other liquids, which makes it suitable for use in high-performance liquid chromatography. It also has a low viscosity, making it easier on the equipment's pump and column.
