t-Butyl 3,5-difluorobenzoate is a potent inhibitor of serine protease. It binds to the serine side chain and blocks access to the substrate. This drug has been shown to inhibit hepatitis C virus (HCV) proteases in vitro and in vivo with good potency. t-Butyl 3,5-difluorobenzoate also inhibits HIV proteases and shows potent antiviral activity against HIV in cultured cells. In addition, it has been shown to be safe with minimal side effects when administered intravenously in animal models of hepatitis B infection.
