WAY-100635 is a potent and selective antagonist of the 5-HT1A receptor. WAY-100635 has been shown to reduce locomotor activity in rats by antagonizing the 5-HT1A receptor. The drug also has been shown to have an antidepressant effect in animal models, which may be due to its ability to increase serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain. WAY-100635 inhibits both 5-HT2 receptors with similar potency, but does not inhibit α subunit autoreceptors or heteroreceptors. This drug is used as a research tool for studying the function of serotonin receptors in the mammalian central nervous system.
