(2S,4R)-4-Benzylpyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid hydrochloride is a diester that can be prepared from the reaction of 4-methylbenzaldehyde and pyrrolidine. The chiral nature of this compound has been demonstrated by the formation of an adduct with methyl chloride. Racemization, alkylation, and esterification reactions have all been carried out on (2S,4R)-4-Benzylpyrrolidine-2-carboxylic acid hydrochloride. It is an analogue of the natural product (-) -1-(3'-Chloroallyl)pyrrolidinium bromide. This compound is racemized during workup and is also converted to its esters.
