Benzyl-pyridin-2-ylmethyl-amine is an apical ligand in coordination chemistry. It has a chelate ring with a coordinating atom that binds to a metal ion, usually via one or more of its nonbonding electron pairs. The square planar molecule is ligated by two other ligands, which are often both hydrogen atoms. The compound can be imino, perchlorate, or dihedral depending on the nature of the central atom and the ligands. Benzyl-pyridin-2-ylmethyl-amine is a dinuclear complex with two identical ligands bound to each metal center. Benzyl-pyridin-2-ylmethyl-amine has been shown to bind ammonium ions and form stable complexes with them. This binding between benzyl pyridin 2 yl methyl amine and ammonium ions is stronger than that of ammonia itself.
