Hexyltriethoxysilane is an organic compound that is a colorless liquid with a strong odor. It is used as an intermediate for the production of silicones and other silicon-containing compounds. Hexyltriethoxysilane has been shown to react with cationic polymerization, forming polysiloxanes. The compound also reacts with decylphosphonic acid, forming linear polysilanes. Hexyltriethoxysilane also reacts with hexane to form a hydroxyl group, which can be removed through gravimetric analysis or hydrolysis. In addition, hexyltriethoxysilane can react nonpolar solvents such as hexane and acetone at high temperatures to produce monolayers on surfaces, which are composed of aliphatic hydrocarbons.
