3-Methyl-9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole is a β-carboline alkaloid that has been shown to have both pharmacological and antibacterial effects. 3-Methyl-9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole has a latency period of 6 hours and antagonizes the exploratory behavior of conspecifics. In addition, it has shown an anxiolytic effect in rats. The mechanism of action for this compound is not well understood but may be due to its benzodiazepine activity. 3-Methyl-9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole also inhibits the growth of bacteria such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
