2-Hydroxyadipic acid is a fatty acid that is synthesized from glycerol and succinic acid. It has been found to be an important component of the acute phase response in animals. 2-Hydroxyadipic acid has been shown to increase the production of lysophosphatidylcholine, which may be due to its ability to inhibit phospholipase A2. This compound also has anti-inflammatory effects. 2-Hydroxyadipic acid has been shown to have anticancer activity in mice with colon cancer. This effect was attributed to its ability to stimulate apoptosis by increasing the expression of p53 and Bax, while decreasing the expression of Bcl-2 and Mcl-1. 2HAA can also induce cell death by inhibiting DNA synthesis and protein synthesis in cells at high concentrations.
