This compound is used as a reagent for the synthesis of imidazole derivatives and trifluoromethylated alkylthio compounds. Ethyl 2-cyclopentylacetate can be used as a solid catalyst for reactions involving β-amino acids and α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids.
