Product Information

Name:
Ethyl 2-Hydroxy-3-butynoate
Synonyms:
  • 2-Hydroxy-3-butynoic acid ethyl ester
Description:

Ethyl 2-hydroxy-3-butynoate is a reversible inhibitor of the enzyme chalcone synthase. It binds to the substrate molecule and prevents it from binding to the enzyme, preventing the formation of a product that would be used in photosynthesis. When ethyl 2-hydroxy-3-butynoate is reconstituted with an enzyme and substrate, it does not have any effect on photosynthetic activity. This suggests that this process is irreversible. Ethyl 2-hydroxy-3-butynoate has shown to be reactive at neutral pH when hydrogen bonding occurs. The deuterium isotope effect has been used to determine whether or not ethyl 2-hydroxy-3 butynoate is an irreversible inhibitor. The uptake of ethyl 2 hydroxy 3 butynoate by plants was found to be irreversible.
