1-Bromo-2-octyne is an allylation agent that can be used in the synthesis of fatty acids. This compound is synthetically derived from diisopropylamine and zinc powder. 1-Bromo-2-octyne also reacts efficiently with terminal alkynes, and can be used to form geometric isomers of propargyl alcohol. The product can be quaternized with halides such as bromide or iodide to form a variety of products. 1-Bromo-2-octyne has been shown to react with fatty acid chlorides to form esters and amides.
