2,6-Dimethylquinazolin-4(3H)-one is a dithiocarbamate compound that has shown to have significant inhibitory activity against myelogenous leukemia cells in vitro. This drug has also been shown to be effective in vivo and to induce apoptosis in human myelogenous leukemia cells. 2,6-Dimethylquinazolin-4(3H)-one inhibits the proliferation of leukemia cells by inhibiting the synthesis of DNA chains and phosphodiester bonds in DNA, thereby inhibiting cell division. The mechanism of action for 2,6-dimethylquinazolin-4(3H) - one is not well understood but it can be assumed that it inhibits the enzyme topoisomerase II, which may lead to an increase in double stranded breaks in DNA strands.
