2-(tert-Butyl)anthracene is a photolyzed compound that is used in organic synthesis. It can be synthesized by the reaction of 2-bromoanthracene with tert-butanol and sodium hydroxide. 2-(tert-Butyl)anthracene has two isomers, 2,6-dibromoanthracene and 2,7-dibromoanthracene. Both compounds undergo alkylation reactions with tert-butanol to produce the corresponding bromohydrins. The monolayer of 2-(tert-Butyl)anthracene can be used as a catalyst for bond cleavage reactions in analytical methods. It also has acidic properties that form trifluoroacetic acid when exposed to oxygen and light. This property makes it useful in analytical methods such as gas chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and mass spectroscopy.
