4-(3-Hydroxyphenyl)phenol is an acid catalyst that is used in the industrial preparation of polyesters. This chemical has two different forms, a crystalline form and a liquid form. The crystalline form has a lower melting point than the liquid form and can be switched between these two forms by changing the temperature. 4-(3-Hydroxyphenyl)phenol has been shown to be an effective catalyst for hydrogenation reactions at temperatures below 200 °C and fluorination reactions at temperatures below 150 °C. 4-(3-Hydroxyphenyl)phenol is used as a reagent for the synthesis of biphenyls from phenols, alcohols, and chlorides or bromides, which are prepared from chlorine gas and hydrogen gas at low temperatures.
