3,4-Dichlorobenzyl isothiocyanate is a molecule that mimics the natural substrate of β-galactosidase. It inhibits β-galactosidase by competing with the natural substrate for binding sites and prevents it from cleaving galactose from the sugar ring. 3,4-Dichlorobenzyl isothiocyanate has been shown to inhibit tuberculosis in vitro, but not in vivo. The spectrum of 3,4-Dichlorobenzyl isothiocyanate includes potent inhibitors of thioureas, l-dmdp, β-glucosidase, and α-l-rhamnosidase. 3,4-Dichlorobenzyl isothiocyanate also inhibits cyclic peptides such as the erythromycin lactone and dideoxyadenosine monophosphate (dAMP).
