Humic acid, sodium salt is a natural substance that can be found in soil, peat, and other organic materials. Humic acid can be used in wastewater treatment to remove dissolved organic compounds and heavy metals. It also has the ability to increase photosynthetic activity in plants due to its high surface area and adsorption properties. Humic acid has been shown to have anti-cancer effects when it is applied topically on skin cancer cells. When humic acid is at an optimum concentration, it can promote the production of growth factor-β1. The sodium salts present in humic acid contribute to its acute toxicities, but are not considered toxic themselves. Basic fibroblast cells have been shown to die with exposure to water vapor or water solutions containing humic acid at high concentrations. Sodium citrate can be used as a substitute for humic acid in some applications due to its similar properties and lower toxicity levels.
