Product Information

Name:
4-Methyl-2,3-dinitrophenol
Synonyms:
  • 2,3-Dinitro-4-methylphenol
Description:

4-Methyl-2,3-dinitrophenol is a nitrated aromatic compound that is used as a precursor in the production of explosives and dyes. It is typically produced by nitrating 4-methylphenol with a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid. The process can be divided into two stages: nitration and countercurrent extraction. In the first stage, 4-methylphenol is mixed with concentrated nitric acid to form 4-nitrophenol. This solution is then mixed with an excess of concentrated sulfuric acid, causing it to react with the 4-nitrophenol to form 4-methyl 2,3-dinitrophenol. In the second stage, 4-methyl 2,3-dinitrophenol reacts with water and alcohols to form 2,4-, 2,5-, or 2,6-dinitrophenylhydrazine.
