Methyl 4-(morpholin-4-ylmethyl)benzoate is a reactive compound that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds. It can be prepared by reductive amination of 4-aminomethylbenzoic acid with morpholine. The reduction step is efficient and can be carried out in high yield even if the starting material contains electron-withdrawing groups such as aldehydes, amines, heterocyclic, or aromatic aldehydes. Methyl 4-(morpholin-4-ylmethyl)benzoate has been used for the synthesis of a number of drugs including nimesulide, sulindac, and ibuprofen.
