Methyl 2-(N-methylformamido)acetate is a reactive compound with antibiotic activity. It is an analog of chloral, chlorides, oxalyl and formamide. Methyl 2-(N-methylformamido)acetate has been shown to be active against gram-negative bacteria, such as E. coli and Proteus species. The reactive nature of this molecule allows it to hydrolyze amide bonds in proteins, which may lead to the destruction of the cell membrane and death of the bacteria.
