21H,23H-Porphine-2,7,12,18-tetrapropanoic acid is a polymerase chain inhibitor that inhibits DNA synthesis. It binds to the enzyme DNA polymerase in the bacterial cell and blocks the synthesis of new DNA strands. The compound also inhibits the production of coproporphyrin in humans and other mammals. 21H,23H-Porphine-2,7,12,18-tetrapropanoic acid has been shown to reduce tumor growth in murine models and can be used as an anti-angiogenic agent. The drug is also effective against erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) and carcinoma cells lines in vivo.
