Oxazolo[5,4-b]pyridin-2(1H)-one is an inhibitor of the enzyme propylphosphonic acid reductase. This enzyme converts propylphosphonic acid to aldehyde and phosphate. Oxazolo[5,4-b]pyridin-2(1H)-one inhibits the reaction by binding to the active site of the enzyme and prevents it from carrying out its function. Oxazolo[5,4-b]pyridin-2(1H)-one has been shown in various clinical studies to be effective against cancer cells. It has also been shown to inhibit the biosynthesis of indole alkaloids in plants such as monoterpenoid indole alkaloids (MIAs), which are used as antimalarial drugs.
