Balanophonin is a low-energy chemical compound that is found in Gardenia jasminoides. It has been shown to inhibit the activation of Tlr4 by inhibiting the phosphorylation of myeloid differentiation factor 88 and interleukin-1β. Balanophonin also inhibits tumor necrosis factor-α and nitric oxide production, which may be responsible for its anti-cancer effects. This compound has a tyrosinase inhibitory effect and can be used to treat skin cancer. Balanophonin also has an inhibitory effect on the growth of human colon carcinoma cells in vitro.
