5-(3-Hydroxypropyl)-7-methoxybenzofuran is a natural product that inhibits the production of TNF-α and other inflammatory mediators in macrophages. The mechanism of action is not yet known, but it may be due to its ability to inhibit the activity of acanthopodium (a natural product from Zanthoxylum) or by inhibiting the production of TNF-α by stimulating the release of nitric oxide. The drug was tested on rats with arthritis and found to reduce inflammation.
