Description:

Eletriptan is a drug that is used to treat migraines. It belongs to the class of drugs known as triptans, which are serotonin receptor agonists. Eletriptan is a potent inhibitor of the multidrug efflux pump (MEP) and has been shown to inhibit the activity of p-glycoprotein (P-gp) by competitive inhibition. The MEP is a membrane protein found in cells that protects cells from toxic substances by pumping them out of the cell. P-gp is also called MDR1 and is an efflux transporter that pumps many drugs back into the intestinal lumen or into bile, thus preventing their absorption into the bloodstream. Triptans such as eletriptan have been shown to have side effects such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and lightheadedness. These side effects are due in part to the fact that they interact with serotonin receptors in the brain. Other side effects include chest pain, tightness,
