AIDA is an inhibitor of transcription-polymerase chain reaction (PCR). It has been shown to inhibit the polymerase chain reaction in vitro and to have a locomotor stimulant effect in vivo. AIDA also has fluorescence properties that are dependent on its concentration, and can be used as a fluorescent probe for intracellular calcium concentrations. AIDA inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the all-trans retinoic acid receptor and increasing intracellular calcium levels. It also binds to other proteins, such as glutamate receptors, vasoactive intestinal peptide and cycloheximide, with no known effects.
