Benzyl 2-(4-formylphenyl)acetate is a potent and selective inhibitor of the protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B). PTP1B is a negative regulator of insulin signaling. Benzyl 2-(4-formylphenyl)acetate is a promising lead compound for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, as it has been shown to improve glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity in vivo. The structure of this molecule has also been shown to be an effective inhibitor of the enzymatic activity of PTP1B, which may represent a new class of therapeutic agents for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
