Dimethenamid-ethane sulfonic acid (ESA) sodium is an antiparasitic and antibiotic chemical. It is a highly pure, synthetic chemical that has been used as a chemotherapy agent for the treatment of various types of microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. ESA is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It has high antibacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Mycobacterium avium complex, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii and Enterobacter cloacae. In addition to its antimicrobial properties, ESA also exhibits antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus type 1 in vitro.
