Otamixaban is an inhibitor of activated factor Xa. It inhibits the coagulation process by binding to and inhibiting the activity of factor Xa. Otamixaban is a prodrug that is converted to its active form, otamixaban-activated, in the acidic environment of the stomach. This drug has been shown to be effective in preventing thrombosis in patients who have undergone coronary artery bypass grafting or percutaneous coronary interventions, as well as patients with congestive heart failure. Otamixaban is a specific antidote against heparin overdose and has been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties that are similar to those of heparin. Otamixaban also has the potential for drug interactions with other anticoagulants such as warfarin and aspirin, which should be taken into account when prescribing this drug.
