2-Hydroxy-3-(4-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazin-1-yl)propane-1-sulfonic acid xhydrate is an extracellular, sulfonated amino acid. It binds to the magnesium ion and is able to form dianions in aqueous solution. 2-Hydroxy-3-(4-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazin-1-yl)propane-1-sulfonic acid xhydrate has been shown to be effective against proteases that are sensitive to anionic binding agents, such as trypsin and chymotrypsin. This compound also interacts with anionic surfaces, such as those found on bacteria.
