The reaction requires a catalyst such as nickel chloride or palladium chloride. The intermediate, 2-chloro-N,N-dimethylaniline, can be hydrolyzed to give methyl N-[3-(aminomethyl)phenyl]carbamate. This chemical has been used in the synthesis of other compounds such as phenyl and benzoylureas.
