Ethyl 5-chloro-1,2-oxazole-3-carboxylate is a cytotoxic drug that has been shown to be selective against the virus Coxsackievirus B3. It is a synthetic compound that has been shown to have antiviral activity against Coxsackievirus B3 and pleconaril. The selectivity index of this drug is 0.8. This means that for every 100 compounds with the same biological activity, only 8 are able to inhibit the growth of Coxsackievirus B3. Other modifications include an amide bond between the sulfur atom in ethyl 5-chloro-1,2-oxazole-3-carboxylate and the piperazine group at position 3 on the 1,2 oxazole ring.
