It has been shown to have bactericidal activity against subtilis and bactericidal activity against staphylococcus and other species of bacteria. 4-(Hydroxymethyl)-1-(3-methylbut-2-enyl)-3,7-dioxatricyclo[4.2.0.02,4]octan-8-one inhibits bacterial growth by alkylating DNA and RNA, which prevents transcription and replication of genetic material in cells.
