4-Hydroxy-6-methyl-3-[(E)-3-phenyl-2-propenoyl]-2H-pyran-2-one is a reactive iminoquinone that has been shown to inhibit the mitochondrial membrane potential and induce apoptosis in cancer cells. It also inhibits the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by mitochondria. This compound has been found to have an inhibitory effect on human ovarian carcinoma cells. 4-Hydroxy-6-methyl-3-[(E)-3-phenyl-2-propenoyl]-2H-pyran-2 one is hydrolyzed in vivo to form a hydrolysis product, which can then be conjugated with annexin or stained with other fluorescent dyes such as calcein.
