The chemical synthesis of 3-Oxo-4-phenylbutanenitrile involves condensation of malonic acid, n-hexane, dodecanoic anhydride, and nitrobenzene in the presence of propionic acid. The resulting product can be purified using column chromatography. This compound has been shown to have anti-inflammatory activities in vitro and in vivo that may be due to its ability to inhibit β-glucan synthesis.
