2,3-Phenazinediol is a fluorescent compound that has been used as a sensor for formyl groups. It emits light when irradiated with light of a wavelength of 360 nm and its fluorescence spectrum is sensitive to methoxymethyl groups. The molecule can be converted into the corresponding singlet oxygen by irradiation with light at wavelengths of 340 nm or higher. 2,3-Phenazinediol has been shown to yield high yields in the reaction between phenol and formaldehyde.
