N,N-Diethylsalicylamide is an amide with a structural formula of C8H14N2O3. It is used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, and has been shown to be effective in some cases. This drug binds to the 5-HT2 receptors that are present on cells of the digestive tract. The binding site for this drug is characterized by a high affinity for nucleophilic groups, such as hydrochloric acid, amines, and ethylene diamine. N,N-Diethylsalicylamide has also been shown to cause bowel disease through its ability to activate the cells present in the intestinal wall. The activation of these cells may be due to its ability to form intermolecular hydrogen bonds with other molecules or heterocycles.
