5,6-Dichloro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-2-thiol is a potential antiviral agent that inhibits the synthesis of nucleosides. It has been demonstrated to inhibit the replication of viruses and inhibit the growth of certain protozoans. 5,6-Dichloro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-2-thiol is effective against herpes virus and HIV and has also been shown to be active against influenza A viruses. This drug is also an alkylating agent that can cause DNA damage by binding to cellular macromolecules such as DNA and RNA. 5,6-Dichloro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole-2-thiol inhibits protein synthesis in cells by inhibiting amino acid uptake and preventing the formation of mRNA from DNA templates.
