Gadolinium nitrate hexahydrate is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water. It has a molecular weight of 325.5 and a melting point of 4.5 °C to 5 °C. Gadolinium nitrate hexahydrate is used as the gadolinium source for producing the gadolinium-based contrast agent, Gd-DTPA, which is used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and other diagnostic procedures. The compound is also used as a catalyst and an additive to improve the performance of certain polymers such as polyethylene terephthalate and polyester. Gadolinium nitrate hexahydrate can be synthesized by reacting diphenyl ether with hydrochloric acid and then adding ethylene diamine gas to form the gadolinium nitrate hexahydrate salt. This reaction requires thermal expansion due to the change in volume caused by heating, but not magnetic stirring or photomultiplier tube irrad
