8-Oxycoptisine is a cytostatic agent that belongs to the group of c2c12 myotubes. It is a protopine derivative and has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity in vitro. The chemical structure of 8-Oxycoptisine consists of an octadecyl caffeate moiety and a phenylalanine ring, with the octadecyl caffeate moiety being the only structural difference from protopine. 8-Oxycoptisine has been shown to have multidrug resistance and cytostatic effects on cell growth in culture, which may be due to its ability to inhibit uptake by cells. This compound has also been shown to produce disease activity in animals with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, suggesting that it may be useful for treatment of human diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
