It is a white, crystalline solid that can be obtained by condensation of malonic acid and nitroethane in alkaline media. The reaction is catalyzed by hexamethylenetetramine, which is often used as an additive to increase the yield of the reaction. The product can also be obtained by recycling 1-methylmalonic acid and nitromethane. A spectroscopic analysis revealed that this compound has a mass spectrum containing peaks at m/z = 162 (100%), 145 (0.2%), 121 (8.9%)
