Coproporphyrin I dihydrochloride is a synthetic coproporphyrin that has an inhibitory effect on the enzyme telomerase. It also has electron-reactive properties, which means that it can be detected by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. Coproporphyrin I dihydrochloride is used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other diseases that are caused by reactive oxygen species. This drug can be conjugated with proteins to enhance its sensitivity and specificity in immunoassay methods. Coproporphyrin I dihydrochloride is also used as an active substance in optical devices, such as lasers.
