3,4-dimethoxybenzimidamide is a pentamidine derivative. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of plasma and tissue aminopeptidases by acting as an anticomplementary agent. 3,4-dimethoxybenzimidamide also inhibits the development of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in mice. The amidine group in this compound may be modified to produce a range of derivatives with different pharmacological activities. 3,4-dimethoxybenzimidamide has been shown to inhibit the uptake of pentamidine into cells and tissues in vivo. This drug is not active against bacteria or fungi; however, it does have anti-inflammatory properties due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
