2-Amino-1,3-thiazole-5-thiol is an inhibitor of bacterial and tumor cell growth. It has been shown to block the synthesis of proteins in cancer cells and inhibit the growth of bacteria that are resistant to gentamicin. 2-Amino-1,3-thiazole-5-thiol is a member of a class of compounds called nonclassical inhibitors because it binds to the ribosome at a site other than the peptidyl transferase center. This binding blocks the production of proteins vital for cell division by inhibiting protein synthesis. 2-Amino-1,3-thiazole-5-thiol has not been tested in humans or animals, but has shown promising results in molecular modeling studies.
