2-Hydroxypyridine-3-carboxamide is a pyridone analog that has been shown to inhibit the replication of HIV in clinical studies. This agent binds to the receptor binding site of the virus, preventing it from attaching to human cells and causing infection. It also inhibits influenza viruses and wild-type viruses. 2-Hydroxypyridine-3-carboxamide has pharmacokinetic properties that allow for once-daily administration and its antiviral potency can be increased by combining with other drugs such as ribavirin or amantadine. The gene product of this compound is involved in cancer cell proliferation.
