3-Carboxy-N.N,N-trimethyl-2-oxo-1-propanaminium chloride (3CMP) is a macrocyclic compound that is formed by the condensation of two molecules of formaldehyde with one molecule of trimethylamine. 3CMP is used as a substrate in the enzymatic synthesis of carnitine and other macrocyclic compounds. It can be used to generate formaldehyde from methanol through the oxidation of formate with hydrogen peroxide, or it can be used as an ion exchange resin for water purification. 3CMP has also been shown to inhibit the activity of enzymes involved in fatty acid biosynthesis, such as formate dehydrogenase and acyl coenzyme A reductase.
