Angelic anhydride is a growth factor that binds to the receptor for the epidermal growth factor (EGF) and can be used to treat skin cancer. It has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). Angelic anhydride is also used as a chemical building block in organic synthesis because of its high stability. The reaction products are oxadiazole derivatives, which have been shown to have receptor agonism, nitrogen atoms, and sesquiterpene lactones.
